When it comes to coastlines, the Pembrokeshire Coast is often said to battle it out for supremacy with Cornwall, and come out on top. The National Park’s coastal area is unspoilt, rugged, and beautiful in equal measure, and the perfect place for some outdoor adventures. Preseli Venture outdoor activity centre has been open since 1988, offering eco lodge accommodation and activity breaks to adults, families, students, and other groups.
Although the range of activities on offer features sea kayaking, surfing, and hiking, the fully qualified team of instructors also have a signature product in the sport of coasteering. In the 1973 book ‘Sea Cliff Climbing’ John Cleare and Robin Collomb offered up a prediction that “a few enthusiasts believe that coasteering will become popular and has a big future”.
This was one of the first uses of the term coasteering, although elements of the sport date much further back, with examples recorded of people finding ways to access coves and other points cut off on a headland. Coasteering today is a guided recreational activity, which combines the outdoor activities of cliff jumping, climbing, swimming in or around caves and rock gulleys, rock scrambling, and wave riding. A range of exciting experiences await, and the good thing is no day will ever be the same, as every session will be affected by the tide, weather conditions, swell, and location!
Preseli Venture have been offering coasteering experiences along the Pembrokeshire Coast for over 20 years, so if you book a session you’ll be in safe hands, and of course well equipped. The kit includes wet suits, wet suit gloves and socks, neoprene shorts, a buoyancy aid, and a helmet, so you’ll be warm, safe, and comfortable.
Coasteering is on offer either on its own or as part of an adventure day or weekend. For courses run at the weekend, you have to be over 18, while families are welcome mid-week for sessions. Some seasonal rates or group discounts may apply, which you can check before booking. If you book a weekend, then you can look forward to 2 coasteering sessions in different locations and another adventure activity or coastal hikes. All coasteering locations are within a 15 minute drive of Preseli Venture, so you’ll never be far from your next adventure. Everything is provided as well, so when you arrive you’ll have all the equipment you need, transport to locations, drinks, food and accommodation if you’re staying for a break, and fully qualified instructors leading your sessions.
Apart from the age limits Preseli Venture list on their website, there are not many requirements for those wanting to take part in coasteering. You need to be able to swim (even if its doggy paddle!), fit into a wetsuit, and have a reasonable level of general fitness. If you tick all these boxes, then you could soon be taking part in a sport which climbing pioneers first started doing over 100 years ago; if you’re lucky you may even see Atlantic Grey Seals too!
