Tywyn is a seaside town about five miles north of Aberdovey. We like to go there because of its beach, playground and prom area (see photo 1). Click for a map of Tywyn. See this site's map page for details on printing the map. Note that on the map:
If you are travelling to Tywyn through Machynlleth then you have two picturesque routes to choose from:
Tourist InformationThe Tourist Information Centre is on High Street (Stryd Fawr). The Centre's phone number is: 01654 710070. Information last reviewed: 11th/7/06. ParkingThe main car parks are:
Information last reviewed: 11th/7/06. Talyllyn Narrow Gauge RailwayThe Talyllyn Steam Railway runs from Tywyn through beautiful mountain scenery to Abergynolwyn. You can hop on and off the trains at the various stations along the line and this makes it very convenient if you want to explore the series of walks along the valley. The railway also owns and runs Duncan from the Thomas the Tank Engine stories. This engine only runs on special event days. For more details on the railway and its events phone 01654 710472 or visit the Talyllyn Railway website. For parking turn towards the coast where Station Road joins Brynhyfryd Road. Pass the Talyllyn station on your left, cross the railway bridge and the station's car park is on your immediate right. There is a cafe in the Tywyn and Abergynolwyn stations and basic but clean toilets as well. The Tywyn cafe has the more extensive range of food, but me and my youngest daughter (then three) both found sandwiches we liked at the Abergynolwyn cafe. The Abergynolwyn station has a fun railway themed playground suitable for small children. It is situated below the station by the road. Information last reviewed: 11th/7/06. BeachesAt high tide the beach is a mixture of stones and sand. When the tide falls golden sand is revealed. Information last reviewed: 11th/7/06. WalksThe promenade along the beach offers long buggy friendly walks. Information last reviewed: 11th/7/06. PlaygroundsOur kids have always enjoyed the playground on Marine Parade between Pier Road and Corbett Avenue. There is beachside parking and a toilet nearby and a cafe in the playground itself. Information last reviewed: 11th/7/06. Shops and EatingThe main shopping area is along High Street. The shops are all small local shops or ones aimed at tourists. There is a supermarket on Station Road next to the mainline railway station. Although there are cafes in the shopping area we usually find it difficult to find somewhere to eat at busy times. Thus we normally buy a picnic in the supermarket and head for the beach. Information last reviewed: 11th/7/06. ToiletsBasic toilets can be found at either end of Marine Parade. One of them is behind the playground. Information last reviewed: 30th/6/06.
