Photo 1: Borth's sandy beach beneath a high tide

Borth is a seaside village 5 miles north of Aberystwyth. Two miles further north is Ynyslas which is a large sand dune and beach area. Both places have excellent golden sand beaches.

Click here for a map of Both. See this site's map page for details on printing the map. On the map:

  • The coloured road running from the top of the map is the B4353 to Ynyslas, it joins the A487 at Tre'r-ddol.
  • The coloured road following the railway line off the bottom right of the map is the B4353 to the A487 near Bow Street.
  • The coloured road from the bottom centre of the map is the B4572 to Aberystwyth. This offers excellent views over Borth and the Dyfi (Dovey) Estuary.

Borth Animalarium

This is a small zoo (see map for its location). Despite its size it has a wide range of animals, good outdoor play areas for small and larger children and a small cafe. The children can also buy food to feed the animals. The paths are buggy friendly. The zoo's location is quite exposed and most of the exhibits are outside. Surprisingly therefore, this is a popular place when the weather is not so good. For more details see the Borth Animalarium website (phone 01970 871224).

Beaches

  • When the tide is out all of Borth has excellent golden sand beaches.
  • When the tide is in (see photo 1) there is usually still some sand by the turning for the B4572. There is also some rock-pooling here.
  • Ynyslas. This is about two miles north of Borth along the coast, right on the estuary of the river Dyfi (Dovey). Here you will find golden sand beaches what ever the tide. This is also an excellent beach to hunt for shells or fly kites. From Easter to September the public toilets are open but you may have to pay to park.

Playgrounds

There is a small enclosed playground next to the village/community hall. This is on a side road running inland, just up the map from the turning for the B4572. This is a good playground to practice balancing.
